Noah's Ark

Every farmer's farm land should be a Noah's Ark. Yes, you read it right. What I meant here is every farmer should focus on making his land a small conservation biotope by itself to which most of the wild creatures are attracted. For instance, at least creatures like birds, insects, bacteria etc. which play essential role in farming and increasing healthy biodiversity. It's nothing but small museums of nature because different crops attract different species.

I know it's difficult to achieve in short period but it's not impossible in a long run. Just look around you the soil is losing it's fertility because of bad agricultural practices. The use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides is turning our soil into poison in which the food we eat is grown. Also using contaminated water from water bodies, polluted by industrial and urban waste, for irrigation purpose is just making it worse. Earlier we used to bore for water at a depth of 300ft but now it's increased 800ft in most of the areas. This is just because the soil lost it's capacity to retain water. The roots of plants play a major role in holding moisture in soil this in turn holds the soil intact and prevents erosion. But the increased ph level in water due to chemicals from fertilizers and industrial waste are making the roots of plants vulnerable to absorb water and thus as a result they die while the water is evaporated leaving behind the chemicals in soil making infertile. This increased ph level also kills all the good bacteria in the soil.

Not only water but few species like insects also play a major role in making the soil fertile. If you had observed any time a dead animal or rotten vegetable when left on ground, naturally they are eaten up and decomposed by small insects and worms. This is natural process of decomposition which increases the soil fertility making it better for planting and farming purpose. But where are these insects? Research says they are decreasing in number many species of insects are going extinct. There are many reasons for this like farmer's using pesticides, light pollution etc.

Soil is nothing less than gold or diamond it needs to protected. For that to happen agriculture practices should become more environment friendly. That means a massive reduction in use of chemicals in any form. Organic farming can only be increased when there is a demand for it. Only we can increase the demand. But organic farming is just a small part of the solution. We are responsible for our doings so as an individual one can contribute by creating buffer strips near your region with the help of your friends, family or neighbors.

A buffer strip is an area of land maintained in permanent vegetation that helps to control air, soil, and water quality, along with other environmental problems, dealing primarily on land that is used in agriculture.

Every buffer strip created can be a Noah's Ark. Don't wait for someone to help you. Just go ahead, right people with join you because no one believed Noah too initially. Let's live to make this planet a better place for our future generations.
