It's upon the people surrounding the person who is depressed to find out and help them because they are not ready to express themselves. So here are few traits or signs that one should look for in a person to know if they are depressed.
They are silent and quiet than usual
They prefer to be alone most of the times
They throw a fake smile and go back to the blank expression
They use the phrase ' I'm tired' more often
They follow unusual sleep and eating habbits
They contantly look at the ground
They become emotionally distant
Remember, do not confuse depression with anxiety, both are different.

There are different ways to tackle depression;
Do you know nature is the best place to be surrounded with because it has no opinion over you. That's the reason I love to travel, I love going to places which are calm and peaceful.
Open up to people you love
Set achievable goals to keep you going
Watch something funny
Workout
Eat healthy
Avoid drugs and alcohol
Say 'Yes' more often
Sleep on time and wakeup early
Don't use social media for some time
Be kind to one another.
