Apple CEO, Tim Cook wakes up at 3:45 every morning ('Yes, every morning'), does email for an hour. Michelle Obama starts her day with a 4:30 am workout before her kids wake up. General Electric CEO wakes up at 5:30 am for his workout. Pepsico CEO Indra Nooyi is in office by 7 am. Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi wakes up at 5:00 am to do meditation and yoga. Akshay Kumar, bollywood actor, starts his day by 5:30 am.

Alarm Clock

Why do all these rich and successful people have to wake up early in the morning?

On an average every successful person wakesup at 4:00 am. That is waking up before the rest of the world is awake which is even before the competitors are awake. There are several reasons for doing this like,

  • it gives you a head start for the day

  • time for workout

  • extra time to pursue your favourite hobby or skill

  • productive day

  • you won't be late to work or college

  • you can plan your day

  • you can have your breakfast on table

Work Place

These are just few reasons that are observed by different people but it can vary with an individual, if you are waking up at 8:00 am try to wake up at 5:00 am, it gives 3 hours of extra time, you can read a 150 pages book in this time(just an example). Imagine what you can achieve with this extra hours in a day while people say they don't have time.

Let's talk Science

We being diurnal creatures, our body is naturally sensitive to night and day. The pineal gland, pea sized gland in our brain, produces a hormone called Melatonin, which regulates the sleep- wake cycle in humans. It is observed that the hormone is produced in the dark hours only, that is with respect to the sun and light. When our optic nerve in eyes senses any light, a signal is sent to brain saying it's time to wake up and melatonin hormone is stopped producing. This is the reason we are asked to sleep in dark to get good and uninterrupted sleep.

Sleeping tight

Thus, the melatonin secretion is low during the day that is after the dawn and slowly increases by dusk. This has an impact on our brain and it's activity during the day. That's why it is recommended to study during morning hours i.e; between 6:00 am-12:00 pm, the time when the brain has maximum absorption capacity. This is the main reason why we are asked to study in bright light as our optic nerve senses light which in turn sends signal to brain.

It's better to arrive late than never.

I know it's hard for one to wake up at early hours immediatly, but remember the 21 days rule, it takes 21 days to develop a habit. Start with an alarm clock. You might snooze it down some days or might skip for few days because your mind and body are habited to wake up late and sleep more. So you should have a strong reason why should you wake up. In my case, I wake up to workout and read news or books, that motivates me to go through the day. Do something that you have been procrastinating for long time giving "no time" as a reason. But don't forget to sleep early too, atleast have 6 hours of sleep. Apparently people like Jack Dorsey, Narendra Modi, Sergio Marchionne, Shahrukh Khan, etc hardly sleep for 4-5 hours and yet they are productive. When you know what you are doing and what you want, everything seems to be possible. Imagine you are sleeping more than 8 hours a day, that means 2920 hours or more per year, if we take life expectency of 70 years average, then you are sleeping 204400 hours, that is 8517 days or 23 years approximately. In 70 years of life you lived, you'd spent 23 years in sleeping. The ancient yogic scriptures say if you eat and drink right and care for your body then you can reduce your sleep quota.

One last thing I would like to say is, wake up before sunrise, just like the earlybird catches the worm, one day you will become a better person than you are today.
